The Allurion gastric balloon is a soft balloon made of polyurethane material. The material is designed to be approximately 85% lighter than other silicone compounds on the market and is believed to be relatively gentler on the stomach.
The balloon is initially deflated and encased in a vegan capsule that can be easily swallowed and is attached to a thin catheter. Once the capsule is swallowed by a patient and arrives at the stomach, the balloon is filled with distilled water through the catheter to about the size of a medium grapefruit.
