A Guide on Removing the Allurion Gastric Balloon

A Guide on Removing the Allurion Gastric Balloon

When we are talking with patients throughout the entire Allurion Gastric Balloon journey, there is a lot of focus from them on the results first, and then the placement procedure a close second. Typically, a lot of research has been conducted before we’re even contacted regarding all the weight loss options available, after having already tried every quick fix fad diet or exercise regime out there. In this research, invasive surgery options invariably arise, which (while they have their place for some patients) can be confronting. With that, the Allurion Gastric Balloon offers a less scary solution that has clinically proven results, is non-invasive, and has little to no downtime. We’ve spoken before about how the Allurion Balloon is inserted, so we thought we’d also share how the Allurion Balloon is removed, to give you a whole picture of the experience when comparing your weight loss options.

When does the Allurion Gastric Balloon need to come out?

The Allurion Balloon can remain in the body anywhere from four to six months, depending on the individual. While the balloon is considered a less invasive alternative to weight loss surgery, it is still very important to monitor side effects and ensure that your body has taken to the balloon in the way it should be. If you experience symptoms such as extreme cramping, bleeding, unusual pain, significant lightheadedness, unexplained differences in how your body feels or difficulty digesting food, contact your doctor immediately. There is no concern too small to address to ensure you have the safest, most effective Allurion experience possible.

What happens to the Allurion Balloon after four months?

Just like any balloon, the Allurion Balloon eventually deflates. After 16 weeks in the stomach, the balloon gently and slowly releases fluid (sterile saline solution) through a self-releasing thin, flexible tube. The balloon then shrinks down significantly, until it is degraded completely and can be painlessly passed, naturally.

How is the Allurion Gastric Balloon removed?

The Allurion balloon will ideally not need removal, and will instead pass naturally through the gastrointestinal tract, expelling with your regular bowel movements. This should be completely painless.

However, there are rare occurrences where it will be necessary to remove the balloon again after insertion. In some cases, this may require an endoscopy or other medically conducted extraction to ensure the balloon is safely removed. Again, it’s important to monitor your body over this time, checking your stools for evidence of the balloon at around the 16 week period, and contacting your doctor if you have any concerns at all.

What do I do once the Allurion Balloon has passed?

There’s no urgent medical attention required after the balloon has passed. However, you will have a follow up appointment with your doctor for a check-up, and discussion of follow-up options.

Remember, the balloon’s extraction is not the end of your weight loss journey. The support and lifestyle changes you’ve adopted during the balloon period can continue to guide you toward maintaining a healthier lifestyle and managing your weight even after the balloon is gone.
