Guide to gastric balloon costs

Newcastle Obesity Surgery Centre is now offering the Allurion gastric balloon program as a non-invasive weight loss intervention for eligible patients. It is a fully supported healthy lifestyle program, centered around a gastric balloon and digital weight-loss support tools.

The balloon is placed in your stomach during a brief 20 minute procedure, and then effectively induces weight loss by increasing fullness, delaying gastric emptying, and reducing the amount of food eaten at each meal.  After 16 weeks of the Allurion program, patients lose on average 10-15% of their total body weight.  The patient progress is monitored by our healthcare team, where we track your progress using the wirelessly connected digital scales and health tracker app.  After approximately 16 weeks the balloon empties and passes naturally without medical intervention.

Take note however that a temporary balloon does not mean temporary weight loss.  With the Allurion Program up to 95% of average weight loss may be sustained at 1-year follow-up.

Allurion gastric balloons bring many advantages compared to other bariatric interventions, including lower expenses. In order to understand gastric balloon costs, it is important to consider the factors involved in this weight loss intervention.

In this article, we explore the factors that influence the costs associated with the Program and explain how obesity may be costing you more than just your health.

Is obesity costing you?

Obesity comes at the expense of many things. In 2010, it was estimated the average costs for the healthcare and non-healthcare needs of an obese individual are $2,788 per year in Australia. It was also estimated that the total direct costs of obesity to Australian society amounted to over $14.5 billion.

Besides the financial implications, obesity costs people their wellbeing by increasing their risk of poorer mental and physical health outcomes; lower self-esteem; and experiencing various forms discrimination. Additionally, many health systems are not equipped to cope with the specific needs of obese individuals.

However, it’s never too late to act on obesity and reduce its impact on your mental and physical health. With the right bariatric procedure, you can lose weight, transform your life and save money on health and wellbeing.
